It always starts with “I’ll just be out for a bit”
Last weekend, I told myself I was going out for a quick walk. Nothing major, just some fresh air, maybe a coffee along the way. Two hours later, I was sitting in a park, slightly tired, a bit foggy… and yeah, I hadn’t had a sip of water since the morning.
That’s the thing with spring. Our routines loosen up. We move more, but we don’t always adjust what goes with it especially hydration.
Over time (and after repeating that same mistake more than I’d like to admit), I started noticing patterns. There are moments where we almost always forget to drink. Not on purpose. It just… slips.
Here are the five I see all the time and honestly, I still catch myself in them.
-
The “quick walk” that turns into an afternoon
You step out for 20 minutes. No bag, no water. Then you keep going. The weather’s nice, you feel good, so why stop? Except your body notices before you do. -
Picnics where everything is planned… except water
Food? Check. Snacks? Obviously. Something sweet? Of course. But hydration often gets replaced by whatever drink is already there — not always the most hydrating option. -
Terrace season (you know the one)
You sit down “just for one drink.” Then conversations stretch, time passes, and suddenly it’s been hours. You’re drinking, sure — but not necessarily hydrating. Big difference. -
Errands that pile up
You leave the house thinking you’ll be back quickly. One stop becomes three. You walk more than expected. And somehow, water never enters the picture. -
Outdoor workouts that don’t feel like workouts
A bike ride, a long walk, tossing a frisbee… it doesn’t feel intense, so hydration doesn’t feel urgent. But your body doesn’t really care how you label it. Effort is effort.
What I’ve learned (sometimes the hard way) is that hydration isn’t just about discipline. It’s about anticipation. Spring days don’t always go as planned — so what you bring with you matters.
Now, I try to keep it simple. If I’m heading out, even “just for a bit,” I bring something. Ready-to-drink, easy, no thinking required. Because if it’s not convenient, chances are I’ll skip it.
And every time I don’t… I feel the difference. Not dramatically. Just enough. A bit more energy, clearer focus, less of that sluggish feeling creeping in halfway through the day.
Still, I catch myself sometimes. Old habits, I guess!
